Why hire a birth photographer?
I know it seems kind of strange. If someone had asked me before I had my firstborn if they could come in and snap pictures of who-knows-what I would have laughed them out of the room. Then I had my son. It is such a surreal experience and I hardly knew where I was or what was going on. Same with my daughter. Everything is still a little bit foggy to me looking back. I cannot tell you how much I wish I could go back and see my son and daughter on their first day in my arms. A child's entry into this world, their first cry, first time being held by their mother, the tears their usually stoic dad sheds as he sees their firstborn (or second, or third) child -- why NOT hire someone to capture that?
Will you take pictures of my ... you know...?
Everything you want me to see (or not) is entirely up to you! If you want me by your shoulder the whole time, or right behind the doctor as she catches, then that is where I will be. I will absolutely not be anywhere you are not comfortable. Most of the time you will probably not even know I am there!
How much does it cost?
I do an all inclusive price of $400 + travel. The price covers me being on call during your pregnancy, the time at the hospital, babysitting costs, and my time editing. A CD of medium resolution pictures and an online slideshow and gallery are included in the price. Pretty good deal when you think about it!
When should I let you know I'd like a session?
As soon as you can! The moment you know you are pregnant and want a birth session call me and I can get you on my calendar. I only take one session a month.
When will you get to the hospital/birthing center/my home for delivery?
That really depends on you! I typically say when you call your midwife/doctor, call me. Usually when you get to about 5-6cm is when I would like to be there. I am happy to hang out with you from start to finish so I don't miss the big moment! I'm pretty sure caffeine was invented specifically for birth photographers... ;-)
What if you can't make it?
I try to schedule only one birth story a month, MAYBE two if the due dates are at least 2 weeks apart. I will let you know during scheduling of something will not work out. I try to work up an emergency sitter, and an emergency backup photographer or even 2. If I feel there will be a conflict, I don't schedule and refer you to one of my lovely photographer friends.
Do you do just hospital pictures right after the baby is born?
While I prefer to capture the emotions while they are raw and as they happen, I understand not everyone is comfortable with having a photographer in the delivery room. I offer Brand New Baby packages where I show up 1 - 24 hours after delivery. Prices start at $150.
